We launched Steam on September 12, 2003 with the goal of making it easier for game developers to connect with their audience and for players to find cool games. In the 20 years since then we’ve learned a ton, adding features and tools, hosting sales and events, and integrating your feedback to grow Steam into what it is today.
To celebrate, we put together a look back at Steam’s history—contextualized with key tech and pop culture moments and accompanied by some fun new art—and are putting our own works on sale as an extra little something, too. The timeline is packed with historical tidbits, fun facts, and the top released games each year, many of which are joining in the celebration with sales of their own.
Steam wouldn’t exist without the developers and gamers around the world who come together on the platform, and whose feedback and insights help us make it better. So THANK YOU! And here’s to 20 more.
Please join us in celebrating at
