Made in consultation with the Pasadena Police Department and Automobile Club of Southern California, “The Social Drinker and the Anti-Social Driver” is a short, color instructional film from 1972 that details the dangers of driving while under the influence of alcohol. A Charles Cahill and Associates film, it particularly targets people who drink socially with friends at bars or during celebrations who would not consider themselves “drunk drivers.” Through interviews with various researchers at both USC and UCLA as well as a few scripted and staged scenarios, the film illuminates how even those who have had a casual drink or two could pose a risk to themselves and others.

Driver speaks to camera from inside car (0:53). Driver walks among student pedestrian traffic on USC campus (1:38). USC Tommy Trojan statue (1:41). Interview Jack W. Bishop, researcher on project studying drinking and driving (1:48). UCLA Royce Hall (2:43). Two young women throw a small ball as part of scientific research study in outdoor area (2:48). Dr. Slade Hulbert a research psychologist at UCLA, explains the experiment (2:52). Young women throw balls at young man who wards the balls off with ping pong paddle (2:56). Young man given a class of beer by one of the researchers wearing a white lab jacket (4:17). Experiment begins again, this time young man is drunk (4:46). Perspective of driver behind wheel: dashboard and steering wheel in view as well as a bit of the road, car pulls up to intersection with stop sign (5:09). Same view but now simulation, driver has has something to drink (5:20). Car doesn’t stop at intersection and hits pedestrian, freeze frame on pedestrian’s face as they are getting hit (5:30). Original driver returns to office of Jack W. Bishop, interview continues (5:34). Paul, an accountant, sits at desk in dimly lit office and types numbers from a ledger into perhaps 1970s model Comptometer (5:55). Close-up of numbers typed along paper (6:01). Paul and friend drink whiskey at bar counter (6:21). Paul gets into his car, cigarette still in his mouth (6:55). Perspective from drivers seat: view of headlights of cars in traffic in likely Downtown Los Angeles, overwhelming sounds of cars honking (7:09). Photo of fatal crash, car bent and contorted, corpse on road (7:17). Camera pans wedding cake, bride and groom figurine on top (7:23). Bride and groom stare into each other’s eyes while drinking and pouring champagne (7:27). Couple rush out of house excitedly towards car (7:51). Couple drive around in decorated green perhaps AMC Javelin (7:56). Raw footage in green tint plays of first responders taking couple on gurney out of ambulance (8:12). Martin, young adult male, speaks to camera while throwing on beige blazer from his home (8:26). Martin sits in corner of bar waiting for fiancé, young couple flirts to the left (8:40). Martin and his fiancé fight, others look at them (8:50). Headlights of cars driving along freeway at night (9:34). Martin speeds past “Wrong Way” road sign (9:39). Montage graphic images of police standing on mangled car (9:46). Middle-aged “Mr. Stone” drives along downtown streets in perhaps 1970 Chevrolet Kingswood Station Wagon (9:56). Police officer parked on residential street follows the driver (10:07). Station wagon weaves in and out of lanes (10:11). Police officer pulls him over (10:46). Mr. Stone walks along line of sidewalk, field sobriety test (11:29). Breathalyzer test on Mr. Stone at Pasadena Police Station (12:05). Close up: dial of breathalyzer moves, indicates blood alcohol level (12:53). Mr. Stone gets booked at police station (13:25). Paper with local Bail Bonds ads (13:57). Mr. Stone makes phone call (14:05). Mr. Stone looks around “drunk tank” (14:30). Lit up sign “Cocktails” (15:20). Film narrator exits bar gets into taxi (15:23).
