The Forest Service division of the Department of Agriculture (:12) brings a winter treat for travelers in the late 1930’s early 1940’s. This vintage travelogue invites viewers to various winter sport hotspots throughout the country. The first site visited is White Mountain National Forest situated in New Hampshire and Maine. This national park features the White Mountain Trail and Kancamagus Scenic trails. It is also a part of the Appalachian Trail making it a hot spot for winter sport lovers. Snow lovers shop ski gear, play in the snow and explore. The Forest Service Department of Agriculture covers 193 million acres and was founded in 1905 by Glifford Pinchot and Theodore Roosevelt. The film features a score by the US Marine Band Orchestra conducted by the renowned Captain Taylor Branson (:23). He was the 20th leader serving over 40 years. In 1931, Branson inaugurated the “The Dream Hour“ It was originally known as the “Hour for Shut-ins“. A Winter Sports Bulletin of the National Forests advertises areas such as the Great Lakes, the Rocky Mountains and the Pacific Coast Regions for a variety of recreational activities (:52). A vintage poster advertisement encourages winter sport lovers to enjoy National Forests (1:03). A woman tests out a set of new ski gloves (1:21). The store clerk demonstrates how to use ski poles (1:27). Wooden skis are smoothed (1:15). Vacationers spill from a shuttle car (1:34) and head for the 1939 Ford Station Wagon crusted in ice and snow (1:41). A sign welcomes viewers to White Mountain National Forest (1:51). Skis stick straight up in the snow outside the winter lodges (1:59). The Ford Woody rolls in front of the camera (2:05). A female vacationer sinks into a sled (2:15). A dog team runs down the slope (2:21). Snow shoes press thick powder down (2:40). A deer bends to graze for green amid the frozen ground (2:59). A legion of snow shoe-ers enjoy the aerobic sport (3:17). Proper position and correct ski binding is demonstrated (3:43) prior to a test run on a beginner ski trail (3:48). They slide down a small slope (3:55). A sign points for Pinkham Notch Trailhead (4:03). Skiers tear lines in the snow (4:14). A family of four learns the sport (4:23). A line of skiers demonstrate smooth control skiing (4:46). A good shot shows the steep slope as a rider readies for a record setting run (4:55). He sails in the air and touches down smooth (5:03). Snow cakes the Flume Gorge (5:10). The site; uncovered in 1808, boasts natural waterfalls, a scenic natural pool and covered bridges. Mount Washington looms in the distance (5:20). Hermit Lake Shelters are set up at the base of Tuckerman Ravine. Snow lovers hang outside the Shelters (5:31). A mock binocular view shows the stunning scenery as the tourists might view it themselves (5:38). A pair stands atop the junior head wall (5:48). Polished skiers zig zag through a course (5:53). The snow riddled adventurers head for the warmth of the ski lodge (6:30). A guitarist entertains her friends and family around the fire place (6:35) as a huskie dozes (6:39). A forest ranger notes (6:58) the sites around the country which have been developed as recreational sites (7:04). The camera pans around Arapahoe National Forest (7:23). A group waxes their skis on the lodge steps of Cooper Creek Ski Shelter (7:30). A good angle shows the road below; where the skier must travel back down (7:57). Images follow from Wasatch National park situated in Utah (8:04). A skier prepares to sail off a massive jump (8:10). A series of riders stream around a fat tree (8:23). Roads are cleared in the National Forest of California (8:33). Tourists filter into Big Pines (8:36) another gingerbread like winter wonderland of the western coast. This is an unincorporated community in Los Angeles comprised of the Angeles National Forest and the San Gabriel Mountains. Skaters slide over ice (8:40). A pair hops into a sled and mow down the line (8:46). Curtains peel back for the Cascade Range (9:07) which crosses into Washington and Oregon. Mount Hood’s Timberline Lodge appears at (9:09). A snow tractor (9:16) of the Forest Service transports skiers up the terrifying incline of Mount Hood (9:23). A group peels out from the lodge (9:37).
