Produced for the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power by National Television News, “Water for Los Angeles“ looks back at the building of the water infrastructure that transformed the desert into the metropolis that we know as the City of the Angels. Visionary engineer William Mulholland, superintendent of the L.A. water system, was in charge of building the water system, including the famed Los Angeles Aqueduct. Mulholland was born in 1855 and died in 1935. This film was made between the 1980’s and the 1990’s. The film was shot in various places in California.
The film begins with an image of Mars at 0:09. Planet Earth is then shown at 0:27. The narrator describes how water gives life at 0:45. The beginning of Los Angeles is shown on screen at 1:13. Narrator explains where most of the water came from at 1:28. A picture of William Mulholland is shown at 1:53. Building of the Great Los Angeles Aqueduct is shown at 2:13 and onwards to 3:22. The LADWP building is shown at 3:37. Clip of rain falling is shown at 3:55. A diagram of how water flows to Los Angeles is shown at 3:59. A flood control dam is shown at 4:29. The Colorado River is shown at 4:44. Map of water movement from the Colorado River to Los Angeles is shown at 4:54. Cascade Lake is shown at 5:10. Snow covered mountains are shown at 5:38. Sprinklers are shown spraying fields with water at 6:13. The film shows the pristine land that was left untouched due to the land lease agreements at 6:51. The sanctuary for the Owens Valley Pufferfish is shown on screen at 7:11. A fisherman is shown storing his catches at 7:24. School and youth groups are encouraged to use the valley at 7:58. Tioga Pass and Levinin Falls are shown at 8:17. Grant Lake reservoir is shown at 8:34. Crawley Lake is shown at 8:45. The Tinemaha Reservoir is shown at 8:52. South of the Tinemaha Reservoir is where Mulholland rerouted the river to form the original L.A. aqueduct at 8:59. The Haiwee Reservoirs are shown at 9:16. The water travels to Los Angeles without pumping, the Mulholland Aqueduct is shown at 9:52. A Department of Water and Power hydroelectric station is shown at 10:11. The Bouquet Reservoir is shown at 10:21. The San Fernando Valley is shown at 10:28. A water pumping station is shown at 10:53. The water system employees are shown at 11:24. The DWP lab is shown at 11:52. The film ends at 12:48.
