Toots & the Maytals’ international breakthrough hit that became one the first ever global reggae hits when on 9 January 1970, it made the UK charts, where it peaked at Number 47. First recorded by the trio of Frederick ’Toots’ Hibbert, Henry ’Raleigh’ Gordon and Nathaniel ’Jerry’ Matthias in 1969 for Leslie Kong’s Beverley’s Records, the record was issued in the UK by Trojan Records soon after on the company’s primary Trojan label.
