Die Goldene Sieben… „Warum liebst du mich nicht mehr?“ (1939)

“Warum liebst du mich nicht mehr?“ (Lit. Why don’t you love me anymore?) is a melancholic slowfox composed by Horst Kudritzki. Today’ s video features the version recorded by Die Goldene Sieben (The Golden Seven) the magnificent studio band created in 1934 which recorded for Electrola. As is to be expected this is a very elegant recording. The video takes a look a three of Berlin’s largest music halls / variety theaters : the Wintergarten, Scala and Plaza - none of which survived the Second World War. The lesser-known might be the Plaza which opened in 1929 in the building of the former Ostbahnhof on Küstriner Platz (Franz-Mehring-Platz today) in the Berlin district of Friedrichshain. With a capacity of 3000 seats, it was one of the first theaters which catered specifically to the working classes. After 1933 the Plaza as well as the Scala (which had the same owners) were “aryanized“. From 1938 until its closure in 1944 the theater was taken over by the Kraft Durch Freude (Strength Through Joy) organization.
