“I’ll have to check“: David Cameron asked if Gaza is an occupied territory
British Foreign Secretary David Cameron, responding to questions about the UK’s legal position on Gaza, stated, “I don’t think Israel regards itself as an occupying force.“ However, he declined to explicitly affirm Israel’s occupation of Gaza. Despite the UK government’s general use of the term ’Occupied Palestinian territories,’ Cameron avoided confirming the current Israeli occupation.
During parliamentary questioning, Cameron evaded a direct answer on Israel’s occupation of Gaza, even after over two months of the Israeli army’s ground invasion that claimed thousands of lives. He asserted, “Our position is that Israel is fighting a campaign against Hamas. We have to check regularly whether that is in compliance with international humanitarian law and assess that.“
When pressed by Conservative lawmaker Alicia Kearns on Gaza’s legal status, Cameron responded, “I don’t know the precise legal definition of that – I’d have to go back and check.“
