“Wednesday, 24 May The 17th stage of the Giro d’Italia is actually one very long descent. From Pergine Valsugana in the Alps, the riders will ride downhill to the Adriatic Sea. There, arriving on the plain, they will sprint for victory in Caorle after 197 kilometres of racing. Pergine Valsugana is located a few kilometres east of Trento. The town lies at an altitude of 530 metres, which is the highest point of the stage. Because from Pergine Valsugana it’s basically all downhill. First, the peloton follows the valley of the Brenta river. Sometimes the road winds through a wide valley, but sometimes it is wedged between rock faces. In Bassano del Grappa the peloton leaves the Alps and continues the race through the flat country around Venice. Long straight roads lead the riders to the Adriatic coast. They reach it at Lido di Jesolo, where there is a bonus sprint. Along the wide sandy beaches, the pink caravan heads east, first circling the finish town of Caorle a bit before sprinting for victory in its streets.
