After the first rest day it’s time for the 11th stage of the Giro. The riders start in Scandiano and cycle 196 kilometres to Viareggio. A stage with an easy finish, but quite a lot of altitude metres.
The peloton starts in the Emillia Romagna region, where the 2020 World Championships were held. Julian Alaphilippe was the best on the Imola course. The finish is in Tuscany, another region that makes the hearts of many cycling fans beat faster.
Right from the start, it’s uphill. The first 10 kilometres are slightly uphill, but then it goes up to Baiso at 8.2% for 2.8 kilometres. The peloton rolls on until a 6-kilometre descent precedes an extremely long climb, except that the gradient percentages are not very high. Nevertheless, the road climbs almost steadily for 42 kilometres. After crossing Piandelagotti, the Passo delle Radici begins, a 4.3 kilometre climb at 5.8% and also the end point of the seemingly endless climb. The summit of the Passo delle Radici is at an altitude of 1,521 metres.
There are still almost 110 kilometres to go on the Passo delle Radici. Downhill to Castelnuovo di Garfagnana before climbing up to Monterperpoli after 2.6 kilometres with an 8% gradient. Then it’s another 75 kilometres, mostly flat, to Viareggio.
Eight times before, the Giro arrived in Viareggio. The last time was some time ago. Giuseppe Saronni won the first pink jersey of the then Tour of Italy there in 1982.“
