‘If I must die’: Remembering Palestinian Poet Refaat Alareer
Writers, scientists and academics in Gaza have not been spared in Israel’s war.
One of them was Refaat Alareer, a professor of world literature.
He felt obliged to write in English instead of his native Arabic, to reach out and educate the world about Palestine.
One of his earliest poems is titled “If I Must Die.“
He was killed by an Israeli air strike in December, in the heart of Gaza City.
And ever since, he has been remembered through this poem, around the world.
