This is Andy from I love languages. Let’s learn different languages/dialects together. Hebrew is a Northwest Semitic language of the Afro-Asiatic language family, historically spoken by the ancient Israelites and Judeans. It is one of the world’s oldest recorded languages, with a rich literary tradition rooted in the Hebrew Bible. After falling out of daily use around the 2nd century CE, Hebrew was primarily preserved as a liturgical and scholarly language among Jewish communities for centuries. It was revived as a spoken language in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, becoming the official language of Israel in 1948. Modern Hebrew (Ivrit) is distinct from its ancient form but retains significant continuity in grammar, vocabulary, and script, making it both a living, evolving language and a bridge to its historical roots. Today, it is spoken by approximately 9 million people worldwide. The Maltese language, is a unique Semitic language and the national language of Malta, an island nation in the Mediterranean. It evolved from Siculo-Arabic, a dialect of Arabic spoken in Sicily and Malta during the Middle Ages, and has since been heavily influenced by Italian, Sicilian, and later English due to Malta’s historical connections with these cultures. Written using the Latin alphabet, Maltese is the only Semitic language officially recognized in the European Union. It boasts a rich vocabulary that blends Arabic roots with extensive borrowings from Romance languages and English, reflecting the island’s diverse cultural heritage. Maltese is spoken by nearly half a million people, primarily in Malta, and serves as both a spoken vernacular and a literary language.
