Japan earthquake: Buildings toppled as fires rip through residential areas

Powerful aftershocks rocked central Japan on Tuesday morning as the death toll from a New Year’s Day earthquake rose to 48. Several strong jolts were felt throughout Ishikawa prefecture on the main island of Honshu, including one with a 5.6 magnitude shortly after 10am local time.
