Japanese honeybees take refuge first when attacked by the Giant hornet
When the Giant hornet(Vespa mandarinia) approaches, the Japanese honeybees(Apis cerana japonica) first take refuge inside their hive. It is well known that Japanese honeybees can defeat the Giant hornet using a Hot defensive bee ball. However, Japanese honeybees do not immediately attack the Giant hornet. First, they take refuge inside the hive and wait for the hornet to leave. If the hornet still invades, the bees use the Hot defensive bee ball as a last resort to defeat it.
