Nothing can be more serious than strapping yourself into a tiny capsule on top of a giant and fiendishly dangerous object that’s often called a rocket. In spaceflight, even an extremely small error in the rocket can cause terrible consequences, especially for astronauts inside. You can only imagine then how dangerous it truly is. To protect astronauts against those unexpected and terrible events, a launch escape system (LES) or launch abort system (LAS) with different variants was developed and has been applied for many decades. However, these variants reveal several setbacks that have even led to some gruesome accidents in the past. SpaceX, fully aware, ditched the idea of applying traditional variants on its Dragon capsule, and instead developed a new system that is more optimized and cost efficient.
