Placebo, an iconic British alternative rock band, originated in London in 1994, founded by Brian Molko and Stefan Olsdal. The band’s formation was unique, with Molko on vocals and guitar, and Olsdal handling the bass and guitar. Their lineup initially included drummer Robert Schultzberg, who was part of the group until 1996, departing shortly after their debut album release due to tensions with Molko. Steve Hewitt quickly filled Schultzberg’s role, marking the beginning of a new chapter for the band. Despite their diverse origins, with Molko born in Belgium and Olsdal and Schultzberg hailing from Sweden, both Molko and Olsdal were raised in Luxembourg and later moved to London, solidifying their status as British citizens. Placebo burst onto the scene with their self-titled debut album, which, along with a demo and a split single, laid the groundwork for their rise to fame. Their breakthrough came in 1997 with the single “Nancy Boy,“ which became a hit in the UK for its provocative take on gender and sexuality. The band’s androgynous image and music, combined with Molko’s unique voice and lyrics that tackled themes like sexuality, mental health, and drug use, set them apart from the Britpop bands of the time. The band underwent another lineup change in 2007 when Steve Hewitt left due to personal and musical differences, and was replaced by Steve Forrest in 2008. Forrest’s tenure lasted until 2015, after which he left to focus on his own music, leaving Placebo as a duo officially, though they continued to perform with additional musicians. Over the years, Placebo has collaborated with a variety of artists, including David Bowie, Justin Warfield, Michael Stipe, and Alison Mosshart, enriching their sound and expanding their musical horizons.
