Latvia: Children and parents demonstrate against COVID sports retsrix in Riga

Riga locals gathered outside the Ministry of Education, Monday, to protest against restrictions on sports activities for children and young people due to the coronavirus pandemic. Demonstrators could be seen marching through the streets of the Latvian capital, chanting “We want to train!“ and banging hockey sticks on the ground. Among the protesters were young athletes and their parents. In Latvia, vaccination against COVID-19 is not compulsory for children under 12 years of age. However, according to new restrictions related to the spread of coronavirus infection, child athletes are not allowed to practice indoors even if they test negative for COVID-19. “They [children] sit at home, they don’t study, so what do they do at home? They sit with computers, they sit with their phones instead of normal development, sports and everything else,“ a protester said.
