This webinar, a part of the Alliance to Protect Nantucket Sound’s “A Celebration of Nantucket Sound“ (ACONS) educational series celebrating Nantucket Sound’s rich environment, history, and economic impact was recorded on June 15, 2023. Our guest speaker is master boatbuilder Nat Benjamin, co-founder of Gannon & Benjamin Marine Railway, a boatyard that specializes in the design, construction, repair, and maintenance of wooden boats on Martha’s Vineyard. Nat discusses some of the history of wooden boats and boatbuilding on the Cape and Islands. He also speaks on traditional building methods, boat design, and the types of materials needed, including extensive background on the design for the 65’ auxiliary schooner Juno.
