Travelers and sailors on their journeys across the lands and seas have relied on the Pleiades while in search of adventure and their destinies. To honor their special role in navigation, the ancient Greeks referred to the Pleiades as the sailing stars, and Maia’s mother, “the sailing queen”. Pleione’s seven daughters were all renowned for their beauty, but Maia, the eldest star in the cluster, was singled out as exceptional. Maia’s son Hermes was the one who invented the seven stringed lyre, made from a tortoise shell. Each one of these seven strings were related to the seven sisters.
