Teams with NASA’s Exploration Ground Systems Program at the agency’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida completed painting the NASA “worm” logotype onto the booster motor segments that will form the SLS (Space Launch System) rocket’s twin solid rocket boosters for Artemis II, the first crewed mission of NASA’s Artemis campaign. Crews began painting the logo Jan. 22 and completed the painting and priming process Feb. 16.
When fully stacked, the SLS boosters stand 17 stories tall and are the largest, most powerful solid propellant boosters ever flown, providing more than 75% of the thrust at liftoff. Spanning 25 feet end to end – or roughly the length of one booster motor segment – the red logotype will be clearly visible on either side of the mega rocket’s boosters during launch and flight.
