NGOs, private universities, media outlets left without legal status in Nacaragua | DW News

The United Nations has described the latest forced closure of some one and a half thousand NGOs in Nicaragua as ’deeply alarming’. This latest move by Nicaraguan authorities will see mainly religious associations shut -- and it brings the total number of banned civil society organisations to more than five thousand. Their closure is part of a major crackdown by President Daniel Ortega on opponents. It leaves NGOs, media outlets and private universities without legal status.
