Grand Dieu Sauve le Roi (Great God save the King) was a French (and often considered the very first) version of the popular God save the King. It was composed by Jean-Baptiste Lully in honour of the survival of King Louis XIV of a complicated surgery. It would later be adapted by a number of monarchies throughout the world.
