How to Light for Outer Space | Sci-Fi Cinematography 101

Stay tuned to the end for a chance to win a prize! In today’s episode of 4MFS, we’re lighting for sci-fi. For the first time on the show, we incorporate CGI into the shot. Of course, lighting for it on set presents its own challenges. With the space shuttle location that we have, there’s a green screen very close to the actor’s face and a big reflective surface that we’re shooting into. It would be much easier if we didn’t also have to factor in using tube lights, which serve as necessary practicals for a sci-fi setting, but they also spill light everywhere in the scene. How do we control light, work with reflective surfaces, and shoot in a way that is conducive to VFX work? Want more free lighting and cinematography tutorials?
