The song was first recorded by The Vogues in 1965, but their version remained unreleased until 1996. “You Baby“ is featured on the second studio album by the American rock band The Turtles, released in 1966 under White Whale Records. For this album, the group focused on composing more original material. The song was written by P.F. Sloan and Steve Barri, who were known for writing several hits for The Turtles, including “Elenore“ and “Let Me Be“. “You Baby“ was released as a single and reached the top 20 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart. The Turtles were an American pop rock band formed in the mid-1960s, known for their vocal harmonies and catchy melodies. The band’s original lineup consisted of Howard Kaylan, Mark Volman, Al Nichol, Jim Tucker, and Chuck Portz. The Turtles had several hit songs in the mid-1960s, including “Happy Together“, “She’d Rather Be with Me“, and “You Showed Me“. The band broke up in 1970, but Kaylan and Volman went on to join Frank Zappa’s band, The Mothers of Invention, and later formed their own band, Flo & Eddie.
