Breakfast with Bambi the Whitetail Deer Fawn (day 32)

Back in July, Bambi followed us home from an evening walk. The previous evening, we saw a nursing doe that had been hit and killed in the road. We assume that was Bambi’s Mom. He was very dehydrated and starving. The choice was either feed the baby or watch it starve. This guy was too little to fend for itself. Bambi has never been restrained or fenced and runs freely with the local Herd, visiting us whenever he likes. Hunting is not allowed in our community and most neighbors enjoy and are protective of the wildlife we share the land with. Many feed them as well, especially in the food scarce months. All of the deer here are almost tame, and you can approach within feet. Bambi is only slightly tamer than the rest of the herd. The deer here are tamer than the cattle.
