Of course, this song is a classic and has been both recorded and performed by many singers over the past 5 decades. Shirley’s studio recording is measured from beginning to end, which is what the record producers insist upon. But, I don’t believe anyone has done what Shirley does when performing this song live. She treats it as if she were in a musical and emotionally conveying to the audience how life has treated her, and how she has dealt with it. If this song were in a musical, this would be the closing number, for sure. Shirley has always been very sure of her vocal abilities, and at the ending she lets loose.
