The peril from space; a worldwide catastrophe which was abandoned in favour of global warming

Just before climate change became such a big thing, we were being terrified with the threat of destruction from outer space. The menace of asteroids and comets though did not really catch on, and so global warming became our favoured end-of-the-world scenario instead.
