At the end of the Second World War, there were many female guards of concentration camps who were brought to trial and were executed for their crimes. One of the most sadistic female guards was Herta Bothe, a woman who stood at 6 feet 3 inches tall, and she was considered to have been a brute. Many witnesses at her trial testified that she had killed prisoners inside of Stutthof Concentration Camp, and also Bergen-Belsen with her bare hands. Herta Bothe would at the Belsen Trials state that she never killed a prisoner, but there were many others who claimed that she did. She very nearly was sentenced to death for her crimes, and would only be spared the hangman’s noose as she had not worked at Auschwitz. But she was just in her early 20s when she committed many of her horrific crimes.
