This song was written during the Chinese war of aggression (Soviet-Chinese border war of 1969), when Soviet border guards were ambushed and killed by Chinese (PRC) invaders after high tensions in the area. This resulted in shelling and armed confrontations from both sides. The Chinese invasion was repelled with no territorial changes and nuclear war was averted, but not before hundreds lost their lives. This song and its variants were also used in subsequent conflicts such as the Soviet-Afghan war and the wars in the Caucasus.
