Chinese naval hospital ship with 126 medical workers sets sail for South Pacific

The Chinese People’s Liberation Army Navy hospital ship “Peace Ark“ set sail for five Pacific island countries on Monday to offer humanitarian medical services. The 14,300-metric-ton professional hospital ship, painted white with signs of red crosses, set sail from Zhoushan City in east China’s Zhejiang Province at 10:00 for Kiribati, Tonga, Vanuatu, the Solomon Islands and East Timor during its Harmonious Mission 2023 operation. Aboard the hospital ship are 126 medical workers mostly from a naval medical university, and a shipboard medevac helicopter for emergency tasks. The medical workers will offer free diagnosis and treatment of common diseases for local people, personnel of Chinese institutions, overseas Chinese nationals and other groups. Equipped with a magnetically guided capsule endoscope, an intravenous anesthesia robot and other sophisticated medical apparatuses, the hospital ship is able to conduct over 40 kinds of examinations, treatments and surgeries in various disciplines including general surgery, orthopedics, obstetrics and gynecology in its 26 clinical departments and seven auxiliary departments. Having visited more than 40 countries and regions, the hospital ship has offered medical services to more than 250,000 people in the past 15 years.
