Lava began emerging from the top of the famous volcano located in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park on the Big Island, around 12:30 local time, prompting the USGS to raise the alert level to red. A red warning indicates that a volcanic eruption is occurring which has the potential to cause dangerous activity on land and in the air. Because of its remote location, the main hazards are airborne hazards related to gas emissions and windblown tephra (rock fragments) during the eruption, the USGS said. Volcanic activity is currently limited to the summit area, and no lava is visible from accessible areas in the park. The eruption occurred about a mile south of the Kīlauea Caldera and north of the Koa’e and Hilina Pali Pass systems, within Hawaii Volcanoes Natio
