But now Syria’s future is uncertain. Various rebel groups hold different parts of the country, with HTS or Hay’at Tahrir ash-Sham with their leader Abu Mohammad al-Julani, née Ahmed Hussein al-Sharaa appearing to hold most power in the capital and with the largest say in how the new Syria will be formed. About a third of Syria in the northeast is controlled by the AANES (Autonomous Administration of Northern and Eastern Syria) with its military wing the SDF (Syrian Democratic Forces), a coalition of various ethnicities but largely representing Kurdish influence. They are already in conflict with the Turkish-backed rebel group the SNA (Syrian National Army) who control territory in northern Syria and have previously supported Turkey as a proxy abroad. Southern Syria also rose in the offensive against Assad, with the Southern Operations Room being the rebels to capture Damascus. ISIS also still has a presence in the region. Foreign actors also hold considerable influence. Turkey in northern Syria, but also the U.S and Russian bases inside the country. Finally, the Israeli invasion of territory in the southwest, and subsequent airstrikes on various targets also poses a challenge to the new Syrian government.
