Tour of Flanders 2023 (Bruges - Oudenaarde) - route, profile, animation
“Sunday, 2 April
The 2023 Tour of Flanders includes 274 kilometres, 19 (cobbled) hills and six flat cobbled sections. The start is in Bruges and the Oude Kwaremont and the Paterberg are traditionally the last obstacles, after which the last 11 kilometres to the finish line in Oudenaarde are flat.
After 109 kilometres on the Huisepont road, there are the first cobbled sections. Less than 5 kilometres later comes the first climb of the day with the Korte branch, followed after just under 20 kilometres by the Oude Kwaremont. This means that the riders have completed exactly half of the route.
After the Oude Kwaremont, the obstacles follow each other in quick succession. Every 10 kilometres there is a new difficulty. Via the Kortekeer and the Eikenberg, the riders will enter the cobblestones of the Holleweg and almost immediately after that, the Wolvenberg awaits. Then the Kerkgate and the Jagerij are passed with shocks. Over the next 15 kilometres, Molenberg, Marlboroughstraat, Berendries and Valkenberg follow in quick succession.
After the mountain Ten Houte and the Kanarieberg, the finale is just around the corner. 55 kilometres before the finish, the riders have the combination Oude Kwaremont / Paterberg in front of their wheels for the first time. At a brisk pace they continue to the Koppenberg, Mariaborrestraat, Steenbeekdries, Stationsberg, Taaienberg and Kruisberg/Hotond, a series of obstacles within less than 20 kilometres.
Less than 10 kilometres after Kruisberg/Hotond, it’s time for the third and final Oude Kwaremont. The summit is 16.7 kilometres from the finish and the Paterberg follows not much later. This climb is short (360 metres), but with its average gradient (12.9%) and its steepest section (20.3%) it is perfect to shake off the competition.
This is exactly what Tadej Pogacar tried to do last year. Only Mathieu van der Poel was able to follow him, albeit on his toes. The two finished almost half a minute ahead of the first chasers, Valentin Madouas and Dylan van Baarle. The chasers did not give up and while Pogacar stayed on van der Poel’s wheel until 200 metres from the finish, the two passed him. At that moment van der Poel opened the sprint and took the victory. Van Baarle crossed the finish line in second place, Madouas in third. Pogacar was pinned and had to settle for fourth place.“
