His Manfred overture is of a piece with the Dvořák -- driving, hard-bitten (if one’s unsympathetic) and no dallying or sectionalising. Brass turbulence and rhythmic precision ensure that all architectural priorities are achieved, though sometimes at the expense of warmth.
