“I Saw Her Again” is my most favorite Mamas and Papas song of their brief 3-year career. It was recorded in April 1966 and released in June 1966 as a 7” 45 RPM single on Dunhill Records in the US and RCA Victor Records in the UK. It reached #5 on the US Billboard Top 100, #11 on the UK Singles Chart and #1 on the Canadian Singles Chart. “I Saw Her Again“ was inspired by Danny’s brief affair with Michelle Phillips, then married to John Phillips, which, combined with an affair between Michelle and Gene Clark of The Byrds, resulted in her brief expulsion from the group. This song was also John’s way of punishing Dennis to make him feel guilty every time he sang it. During production mixing, engineer Bones Howe punched in the coda vocals too early, inadvertently including Denny’s false start on the third chorus (“I saw her...“).
