In short, I choose three primary colours plus 1 or 2 others. The main yellow I use is Hansa Yellow Medium. As for the red, I would look at the scene and pick a red that’s closest. I pick blue randomly but if I want granulation, I use French Ultramarine. So the typical colours that I use are...
1. Hansa Yellow Medium
2. Some red
3. Either Phthalo Blue or Ultramarine
4. Yellow Ochre for mixing skin tones when needed
5. Pre-mixed green from tube for scenes with lots of foliage
My general tip for beginners is to use a limited palette. Pick three primaries and stick to that. Don’t go more than 4 primaries. You can use convenient colours like Green, Yellow Orche, Burnt Sienna but they should be colours that you are able to mix from primary colour that are already in your palette.
The palette box in the video is the Winsor & Newton Deluxe Sketcher box. Paints were replaced with Mission Gold, Daniel Smith and WN.
