The Great Gate of Kiev as part of Modest Mussorgsky’s Paintings of an exhibition, and arranged for orchestra by Maurice Ravel, is depicted here as the Plan for the great Gate of Kiev designed by the painter Victor Hartmann, as the setting for a religious procession from the painting of Ilya Repin, with priests and their followers carrying banners and musical instruments, which the composers may have envisaged.
