Inside China’s Last Cave Village

Tucked inside the mountains of southwestern China, Zhongdong is the country’s last cave village. Settled by members of the Miao ethnic minority as a hideaway from bandits, the cave is now home to 18 families who have kept the same lifestyle for decades and live below the poverty line.
