1991 Nissan R91CP Group C Car in action at Mugello Circuit: Warm Up, Acceleration & Sound!
Here’s the first video I want to share with you from the recent weekend of historic racing by Peter Auto at Mugello Circuit in Italy and it’s all about an iconic Nissan R91CP. For the occasion it was fielded in the Group C Racing series and driven by Katsu Kubota.
In 1989 Nissan competed with the R89Cs, developed in conjunction with Lola, in both the World Sportscar Championship and the All Japan Sports Prototype Championships. For the 1990 season they decided to actually develop two different cars. The chassis of the R90C was still built by Lola but then the car for the WSC would have been designed by Nissan Motorsports Europe, starting from the R89C and improving it, while the JSPC’s R90 would have been built by Nismo, directly in Japan. The car were named respectively R90CK and R90CP, with this second one having a low downforce design compared to the CK.
For 1991, Nissan officially withdrew from the World Sportscar Championship. Nismo continued competition in the All Japan Sports Prototype Championship, and decided to upgrade the R90CPs to better compete with Toyota and Mazda. The new cars, known as R91CP, had slight modifications over the previous car, most notably the boxy turbo inlets placed on the rear fenders of the R90CP were made into smaller slits, while a large snorkel was added to the top of the engine cover to cool the rear brakes in place of the previous twin brake ducts. The engine was kept from the R90: a , twin-turbocharged Nissan VRH35Z V8 engine able to produce over 800 hp and 780 Nm of torque.
This exact car (featuring only the blue, white and red colours but without sponsors/stickers) was caught at Donington Park some weeks ago, probably doing a rollout after being restored. I don’t know exactly what chassis number it has but sure it’s a very interesting example. In fact it features some sort of higher downforce kit with bigger front flaps and a rear wing detached from the bodywork. All these features suggest that the car up here might be the ex-Team Take One/Kokuyo silver R91CP which was raced alongside other Group C cars in the All Japan Championship of 1992, the final year it was held.
If so, the current owner now had restored it by applying the livery of the factory R91CP that achieved the first overall victory as Japanese car at Rolex 24 At Daytona in 1992, which competed in the invitational class.
What do you think? Hope you like the video!
