Andrew Wyatt plays Elegiac Romance by John Ireland on the Willis Organ.
Assistant director of music at Truro Cathedral, Andrew Wyatt plays Elegiac Romance by John Ireland (1879-1962) on the Father Willis organ. He says of the piece:
“This work is a real “tour-de-force” of the organ, showing the vast dynamic and emotional range that an instrument of this size is capable of. The Romance starts with a quiet theme on the gentle flutes of the organ before becoming more and more emotionally embroiled with the turbulent triplets in the right hand. After a climactic build-up to full organ, the pieces quickly subsides to bring back the main theme, this time played on the clarinet before four ominous chords bring the work to a close. Written in 1902, this takes the place of Ireland’s first published organ work. He later revised the piece in 1958, making it more playable on smaller organs.”
