Demonstrators held up banners and placards and waved Palestinian flags and chanted slogans in support of Palestinians and against Israel. Some burned and stamped on depictions of the Israeli flag. “Shame to all Arabs, that no-one helps the (people of) the Gaza Strip, shame to all the Arabs,“ said one demonstrator from Gaza. Sunday’s protest in Athens was held a day after tens of thousands of pro-Palestinian demonstrators marched in cities from Washington to Milan, calling for a halt to Israel’s bombardment of Gaza. The marches reflected growing disquiet about the mounting civilian casualty toll and suffering from the Israel-Hamas war. Israel has been pounding Gaza with airstrikes since Hamas militants carried out an unprecedented cross-border attack on October 7, in a brutal rampage. The Palestinian death toll in the Israel-Hamas war reached 9,700, according to the Hamas-run Health Ministry in Gaza. In the occupied West Bank, more than 140 Palestinians have been killed in violence and Israeli raids.
