Challenges in European Defense - Global Security Forum 2023

Defense spending in Europe has changed drastically in 2022 with large scale increases in defense budgets throughout the continent. This panel will focus on European military readiness, including the capability gaps and interoperability struggles of European militaries and challenges to Europe’s industrial base. The panelists will also explore core U.S. defense dependencies and the best path forward for Europe to modernize its defense capabilities and industrial base to rise to meet global threats. The panel will feature General Chris Badia, Deputy Supreme Allied Commander for Transformation at NATO, Vice Admiral Hervé Bléjean, Director General of the European Union Military Staff, and Ms. Heather A. Conley, President of the German Marshall Fund of the U.S. This discussion will be moderated by Max Bergmann, Director of the CSIS Europe, Russia, and Eurasia Program and Stuart Center.
