Fauré, in composing a mass for the dead, had arise a gentle dawn in the light of love and hope. Maurice Duruflé followed it in spirit, if not to the letter. Like Fauré, he was imbued with the tradition of Gregorian plain-chant, retaining its colour and relief. Expressive like sighs, the Gregorian neumes are also supple like cloth. Duruflé meditated upon the service for the dead, ans each time he was able to use a textual motif, he did not hesitate to do so, just as he delved into the voluptuousness of contemporary harmony, which Ravel and Fauré - the latter nicknamed “the voluptuous Gregorianiser“ by Reynaldo Hahn - showed that it fitted perfectly into the archaism of the modal scales. On antique thoughts, Duruflé created new verses. The plain-chant themes are first presented nude, then clothed in a harmonic garb both sumptuous and sober: here lies the composer’s extreme skill, who constantly mancuvers between two pitfalls, dryness and anachronism, both avoided with disconcerting mastery.
