You may have already watched a viral clip of Guyana’s president schooling BBC HARDTalk host Stephen Sackur’s talking points on climate change.
Here’s the entire interview with Dr Irfaan Ali - it’s well worth a watch. In it, he details Guyana’s plan to modernise while maintaining its pristine rainforests, which cover nearly 91% of its landmass - an area larger than England and Scotland combined. Guyana is set to benefit from a $157-billion windfall in oil revenue by 2040, according to Rystad Energy, a Norwegian-based independent energy consultancy.
Dr Ali exposes how British colonialism divided Guyana along ethnic lines and how the UK now tries to play on those divisions to exploit the country’s newly discovered oil wealth. Sackur echoes the West’s apparent hope for a conflict by highlighting Venezuela’s claim to the oil-rich region of Essequibo. Dr Ali sidesteps him by referring to diplomatic efforts that have already cooled down tensions. In December 2023, both states agreed not to use force to settle the dispute.
Settle in, have a watch, and please do let us know what you think.
