The incident comes amid increased calls for France to heed the new government’s order to withdraw its troops from the country because of “contradicting interests on Niger.” French President Emmanuel Macron had initially defied orders to remove troops from Niger following the military take over, but relentless protests by Nigeriens forced him to abandon his tough talk and give in to the demands. He recently announced that the troops will be withdrawn by the end of 2023, but Nigeriens who have suffered decades of French occupation and exploitation want it to happen sooner. Relations between Niger and its former colonial ruler, which maintains a military presence in Niger, irretrievably broke down after the ousting of Paris-aligned Mohamed Bazoum in July.
