Daniil Trifonov – Prokofiev: Piano Sonata No. 8 Op. 84: II. Andante sognando

“The Eighth Sonata in particular,” says Trifonov, “illustrates Prokofiev’s cinematographic imagination.” Indeed, the whimsical first themes of the sonata’s first and second movements are both borrowed from Prokofiev’s own score for an abandoned film project based on The Queen of Spades. “The sonata,” Daniil Trifonov says, “is intensely polyphonic, yet tangibly illustrative. Prokofiev is a great storyteller. Prokofiev, meanwhile, embraced cinema as the most complete and modern synthesis of the senses.” Having paved the way for future artistic achievements, the spirit of Russia’s Silver Age is justly celebrated in these new recordings.
