The world is in shock! Monstrous floods wash away houses and bridges in Sikkim, India!
On October 4, a natural disaster occurred in the Indian state of Sikkim.
Due to incessant rains, a high-altitude glacial lake burst.
The flooding was aggravated by the collapse of the Chungthang dam on the Teesta River.
Areas downstream of the river including Mangan, Gangtok, Pakyong and Namchi were flooded.
The destruction of 11 bridges and more than 270 houses was reported.
At least 22 people died.
103 people remain missing.
In the affected areas, drinking water supply systems and wastewater treatment plants were destroyed.
Hundreds of search and rescue teams were deployed in Sikkim and the neighboring state of West Bengal.
The Himalayan region is prone to flash floods and landslides, and floods in Sikkim are not uncommon.
But scientists warn that extreme weather events are becoming more frequent and intense as the man-made climate crisis accelerates.
