Apollo 8 was the first crewed spacecraft to leave low Earth orbit, reach the Moon, orbit it, and return. The Lunar Lander was not yet ready but the Saturn V was. America was concerned that the Soviet Union may achieve a manned lunar flyby with its Zond program so the decision was made to Launch Apollo 8 to demonstrate that NASA was now ahead.
