After initial studies with Ginette Martenot (a pianist and player of his brother’s invention the ondes Martenot), Nigg studied harmony with Olivier Messiaen and counterpoint with Simone Plé-Caussade. In the mid-1940s, Nigg was introduced to dodecaphonic writing and became one of the first French composers to work with that methodology.
