’1974: Turkish Invasion of Cyprus Captured Up Close’ On This Day 1974, Turkish forces invaded Cyrpus by sea and by air. ITN’s Michael Nicholson was at the scene when Turkish paratroopers dropped onto the open plains near Gönyeli, on the road between the capital, Nicosia, and the coastal city of Kyrenia.
