This one is a Swedish ballad first written down in the 1850s, and tells the story of a young squire who is tempted by a troll.
It’s also implied that the troll is actually a pagan woman, and that the song symbolizes a young Christian man resisting material gain that would come with apostasy.
Note 1: Palfreys are luxury horses used for riding.
Note 2: The “Knuckers“ are the closest I could come to the “Neckers“ of the original. The Neckers, or Nixies, were Germanic water spirits that would lure passerbys and drown them. A similar spirit existed in Northumbrian folklore by the name of Knucker.
